Our Story
In the summer of 1974, John and Judy Luchkovitz moved their family from southern California back to Lake Orion, Michigan. With a dream to open a produce market of their own, they began by selling fruits and vegetables from a small roadside stand in town. In November of that same year, they purchased a building at 101 S. Broadway in the village of Lake Orion's downtown historic district, and Lucky's Produce, Plants, and Flowers was born.
Fifty years later, our location is still the same, but many things have changed along the way. The name was changed to Lucky's Natural Foods to better reflect our expanded product selection of natural grocery items, vitamins, and herbs. And in 1993, John and Judy sold the store to their eldest daughter, Tanya, who has been involved in the business since its founding. She has continued the family legacy, with help from her own children and grandchildren throughout the years.
In more recent years, Lucky's has undergone significant renovations to our over one hundred-year-old building. What began as a wooden blacksmith shop at the turn of the century, became a block structure in the 1920s, housing Speaker & Son Hardware. By the 1970s, the building had acquired its mansard awning and plywood siding, giving Lucky's its distinct "retro" appearance. However, after forty years in business, it was time for a major remodel on our historic building, and work began in 2015.
The now updated exterior of Lucky's Natural Foods is a nod to our building's history, maintaining its small town charm while also bringing it into the present. The interior still has its original wood floors and barrel ceiling, while the new entryway - made entirely of 1974 pennies - pays homage to the year Lucky's was established. Through all this, we have been able to honor our past while continuing to grow and adapt to the needs of our ever-changing community.
As a family-owned and operated business, Lucky’s has always been dedicated to providing friendly, personal, and knowledgeable service. We are proud to have a long history in our community, with many of its residents as our loyal customers. From our family to yours, we thank you for your support throughout the years and look forward to many more.
